Pic of the Day: “Crime Wave” revisited

Today’s pic honors Sterling Hayden on what would have been his 96th birthday. He appeared in three films with Timothy: Hellgate (1952), Crime Wave (1954) and The Killing (1956). Here we see him apprehending Tim and Gene Nelson in the climactic scene of Andre De Toth‘s Crime Wave.

I also want to direct your attention to this great appreciation of Crime Wave over at NoirBabes.com, where Timothy is the featured star this week! Hayden brought any film he was in up several notches, just by his mere presence. He is one of the reasons I love the movies so much.  Happy birthday, General Ripper!

Don’t Forget the Blogroll and the Forum

Hey gang, just a reminder that to your right is a rather extensive blogroll. It’s showcasing some really top drawer blogs I’ve come across over the past few months, touching on old movies, classic jazz/R&B, vintage style, and all that type of thing. There’s some rather awesome stuff there, so I encourage you to check ‘em out!

Also, please don’t forget the new TC Experience Forum! Let’s talk about Timothy! See you there!

Pic of the Day: “Rio Conchos” revisited

We now join our regularly scheduled program, already in progress… Our pic for today is another shot from Rio Conchos (1964), directed by Gordon Douglas and starring Richard Boone, Stuart Whitman and Tony Franciosa. Tim has a small but memorable role as Chico, a cantina owner who is a bit of a pimp as well.

You can go to Amazon Instant Video, rent or buy this puppy, and watch it right now! So there!

STOP SOPA/PIPA

As you may have heard and seen, today many websites are participating in a blackout to call attention to and protest the threatened passage of the United States Congress’ Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA). Unfortunately, it appears I have the wrong WordPress configuration to use their blackout plug-in, so I’m simply going to use this post to let you know that The Timothy Carey Experience stands in solidarity with the blackout, and that there will be no regular post on the blog today.

Please read this excellent post which also expresses my views on the subject, and which provides more information.

These bills are dangerous and, if passed, will have the opposite effect of what they purport to accomplish. Please do your part to ensure that they go down in flames! THANK YOU!!!

Pic of the Day: “Francis in the Haunted House” revisited (and a question!)

Two things for you today: The first is an original production still from Francis in the Haunted House (1956). Tim and Charles Horvath are committing some mayhem on hapless Mickey Rooney, who admitted in his autobiography that he remembers nothing about the making of this film. This picture must have been made around the same time as Chain of Evidence (1957), as Tim has the same Frankenstein-esque flat-top haircut in both.

Secondly, I have a question for you all. Would there be any interest out there in having a forum added to the blog? It might be a nice place for folks to have actual discussions about Timothy and his films. Please let me know and I’ll get on it! Thanks for all your support, kind words and encouragement!

Paths of Glory: Anatomy of a Film

Very exciting news from filmmaker David Spodak! From the official website:

PATHS OF GLORY: ANATOMY OF A FILM is a documentary that examines Stanley Kubrick’s 1957 cinematic masterpiece, Paths of Glory. The project was conceived to study the modern art form of cinema with the same level of concentration often given to literature, music, painting and sculpture. The primary objective is to deepen audience understanding and appreciation for the craft and art of filmmaking by combining the subjects of production, technique and aesthetics with historical perspective. The result is a detailed and enjoyable analysis of a film of indisputable quality. It is a work-in-progress, awaiting the inclusion of final production elements and editorial completion.

Please consider a donation to the film’s Kickstarter campaign, and ‘Like’ them on Facebook! We here at The TC Experience are proud to support such a wonderful project!

Video of the Week: “The World’s Greatest Sinner”

IT’S FINALLY HERE! Episode 37 of The Projection Booth, in which I subject the unfortunate listener to my annoying voice as I blather on about Tim and The World’s Greatest Sinner (1962), is now available for your listening and downloading pleasure. Tim’s son Romeo provides the exciting news that Sinner will soon be enjoying a proper DVD release, and will also be coming to Netflix! Let the celebrations begin!

Here at The TC Experience, we’re celebrating by making God Hilliard’s revelatory moment our Video of the Week. Enjoy, and remember – let’s be different. Let’s not hate anyone.

A Twisted Genius and The World’s Greatest Sinner

My beautiful friend Elizabeth Yoffe of True Studio Media, producer of the film My Big Break (2011), writes about her myriad experiences in and impressions of the film industry in her wonderful blog, Yoffe’s Guide to My Big Break. Her latest blog entry is a heartfelt appreciation of Timothy, just in time for the Projection Booth podcast on Tim and The World’s Greatest Sinner. Here’s an excerpt:

Carey was kind of like asafetida – the malodorous spice so odd and powerful it’s known as devil’s dung or stinking gum but also food of the gods. Just as asafetida can impart the right flavor to a recipe when used correctly, so Carey could enhance a film with his unsettling presence. But when handled improperly both the spice and the actor wreak havoc. Thus, although Carey’s talent was admired, rumors of directors and co-stars losing their minds and attacking him abound, and Carey himself said he was known as “the scourge of Hollywood.”

Do yourself a favor and add Elizabeth to your blogroll – you will not be disappointed!
